Is Stripe MCP read-only?

No. It has a read tool for any Stripe API GET method and a write tool for POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE methods. Stripe requires human confirmation for certain writes such as refunds, and what the assistant can do depends on the permissions you grant through OAuth or an agent API key.

How do I connect Stripe MCP to Claude?

Add the official Stripe connector from Claude's directory, or in Claude Code run `claude mcp add --transport http stripe https://mcp.stripe.com/` and then authenticate with OAuth using `claude /mcp`. Stripe also offers `stripe agent setup` to configure supported agents automatically.

Should I use OAuth or an API key?

Stripe says to use OAuth for interactive clients, because you can authorize and revoke a client without sharing a key. For autonomous clients that cannot use OAuth, create an agent API key with only the permissions the client needs and pass it as a bearer token.

What is changing on October 31, 2026?

According to Stripe's docs, beginning October 31, 2026, Stripe MCP no longer accepts full-access secret keys or restricted API keys without the Agent tag. Requests with an unsupported key get a 401 response. Replace them with agent keys or reconnect with OAuth.

Does Stripe MCP connect to QuickBooks, Xero, PayPal or Plaid?

Not according to Stripe's MCP documentation, which lists no such integrations and no market or brokerage data. The tools work with the Stripe API and Stripe's documentation. For PayPal, see the PayPal MCP server.

Can I try it without touching live data?

Yes. Stripe's OAuth consent can grant access to sandboxes, with different permissions from live mode, and Stripe says to test new configurations in a sandbox first.

Is the npx @stripe/mcp package still the way to install it?

It still exists (version 0.3.3, published March 24, 2026) and runs a local server with `npx -y @stripe/mcp --api-key=YOUR_KEY`. Stripe's docs now recommend the hosted server and plugin instead. Check Stripe's docs on the October 31, 2026 key change before relying on the local route.

The read and write tools cover a long list of API methods. Examples from the docs: customers, charges, refunds, PaymentIntents, Checkout Sessions, invoices, subscriptions, coupons, products, prices, payment links, disputes, webhook endpoints, payouts, balance transactions and tax objects, with some preview APIs. Writes in that list include creating refunds, invoices and subscriptions and canceling subscriptions. Stripe says this exposes much of the API without filling the model's context.

Setup and authentication

Plugin (Stripe's recommended route): npm install -g @stripe/cli@latest, then stripe agent setup. It detects your agents and configures the MCP server and Stripe's skills.
Claude: the official Stripe connector is in Claude's directory; or in Claude Code run claude mcp add --transport http stripe https://mcp.stripe.com/ and then authenticate with OAuth using claude /mcp.
Other clients: Cursor, VS Code, Codex and ChatGPT are covered in Stripe's docs. Any client can use https://mcp.stripe.com as the server URL.
OAuth: the consent page lets you grant one or more live-mode accounts or sandboxes and set different permissions per environment. You can revoke sessions under OAuth sessions in your Stripe user settings.
Agent API key: for clients that cannot use OAuth, create an agent key with only the permissions the client needs and send it as Authorization: Bearer .... Test in a sandbox first.

Key change coming: Stripe's docs say that beginning October 31, 2026, Stripe MCP no longer accepts full-access secret keys or restricted API keys that lack the Agent tag. Replace them with agent keys or reconnect with OAuth. Requests with an unsupported key get a 401 response.

Administrators can turn MCP access on or off for the whole team in the Dashboard, separately for live mode and sandboxes. If a managed network blocks it, ask IT to allow mcp.stripe.com.

Limitations and things to watch

It can change money-related data. The write tool can create refunds, invoices and subscriptions and cancel subscriptions. Stripe requires confirmation for certain actions, but you should still limit permissions, start in a sandbox and keep human confirmation on.
Prompt injection. Stripe warns to use caution when combining its MCP server with other servers, because content from one can steer another.
Some tools are previews. stripe_analytics and get_balance_summary are marked Preview or Public preview, and some API methods are marked private or public preview. Behavior can change.
Connected accounts. For Connect platforms, Stripe says MCP does not support OAuth when acting for connected accounts; it uses a restricted key plus the Stripe-Account header. Stripe's page does not say how this relates to the October 31 key change.
The local npm package is older. @stripe/mcp 0.3.3 was published March 24, 2026, and Stripe now recommends the hosted server and plugin.

Pros and cons

Pros

Official, maintained by Stripe, with a hosted server so there is nothing to run locally.
OAuth with per-environment permissions, and revocable sessions.
Human confirmation for certain writes, plus admin controls and tool call logs in Workbench.
Broad API coverage through a small set of tools, and built-in documentation search.

Cons

Write access exists, so a mistaken or manipulated agent can act on real data if you grant it.
Some tools and APIs are still in preview.
The API key rules are changing on October 31, 2026, which affects older setups.
It covers Stripe only. It is not a connector for other finance systems.

Who it is for

A good fit if:

You run a business on Stripe and want an assistant to look up customers, charges, invoices and subscriptions or draft changes for you to confirm.
You are building Stripe integrations and want the assistant to search the docs and API.

Not the right tool if:

You need accounting, bank or brokerage data. Stripe's MCP docs do not list QuickBooks, Xero, PayPal, Plaid or market data, and the tools only touch the Stripe API.
You want a strictly read-only connection. You can limit permissions, but the server itself includes write tools.
For other payment or store data, compare the PayPal MCP server or the Shopify MCP server.

What we could not verify

Whether the October 31, 2026 key rule applies to the local @stripe/mcp package. Stripe's docs say "Stripe MCP" without separating the hosted and local servers.
Pricing details. Stripe's MCP docs state no separate MCP fee; we did not confirm that with Stripe.
Behavior of npx @stripe/mcp with no key. The package README says to pass --api-key or set STRIPE_SECRET_KEY; we did not run it.
Everything about how the tools behave in practice. We read the docs and package metadata and did not connect to a Stripe account.
